Petersham Park is the green heart of Petersham — a 6.6-hectare Inner West landmark with an outdoor pool, playgrounds, sports fields, and shady picnic spots. Here's what to see, when to go, where to park, and the best coffee within a five-minute walk.
Where is Petersham Park?
Petersham Park sits between Trafalgar Street, West Street, and Station Street in Petersham NSW 2049 — about 6 km west of the Sydney CBD in the Inner West Council area. It's a 4-minute walk from Petersham train station on the T2 Inner West & Leppington Line, and buses along Parramatta Road drop you a short stroll away.
What to do at Petersham Park
Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre
Named after Australia's first female Olympic swimming gold medallist, the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre is a heritage outdoor pool with a 50-metre lap pool, a program pool, and a toddler pool. It's one of the best summer spots in the Inner West — open seasonally, generally October through April. Check Inner West Council for current opening hours and entry fees before you go.
Playground & family areas
The playground near the West Street edge is a favourite with local families — climbing frames, swings, and open lawn for kids to run around. It's fully fenced on one side and shaded by mature figs in the afternoon.
Sports fields & the running loop
Petersham Park hosts local cricket, football (soccer), and AFL clubs across two main ovals. The perimeter path is a well-loved local running and walking loop — roughly 800 metres around, flat, and safe after dark thanks to path lighting.
Picnics, BBQs & quiet corners
Bring a rug — there are shaded picnic tables along the Trafalgar Street side and open lawn under the fig trees. Public BBQs are limited, so grab breakfast or a takeaway lunch on the way in.
When to visit
- Mornings (7–10am): quietest, best light, coolest in summer.
- Weekends: busy with junior sport in winter and pool-goers in summer.
- Late afternoon: fig-tree shade, dog walkers, golden hour on the ovals.
Parking & getting there
Street parking is available on Trafalgar Street, Station Street, and West Street — mostly unmetered, but check signs for time limits. Parking fills fast on weekend match days and hot summer weekends; public transport is easier. Petersham station is a 4-minute walk; Marrickville and Lewisham stations are also within a comfortable walk.
Two-minute walk away
